10:26 pm - Tomorrow
Well another year has gone by. This time last year I was packing up my desk at the Beacon, crying over Rusted Root songs and basically having the time of my life... drinking at the Tam. It seems funny that I can single out several months as being the best my life has yet to offer. Yes, the year started out rough. But it was the way I conquered what was handed to me and did it all with my best friends that made it so good. I guess it made it inevitable, however, that the next year just couldn't be as good. It truly wasn't all bad though. Hell, at least I know that I can be sucessful in school and work. I think I have discovered that I am destined for a West Wing-esque lifestyle of all work and little play outside the office. Hopefully it pays off with making even the slightest bit of a change though. As everyone knows, I analyze everything. So lets compare this survey I took last year with 2006 {stuff in () is 2005}:
1. What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?: Worked my first full-time job and then just a repeat of the colleges and heartbreak.
(Got into an ivy league college, had my heart broken, went to missouri (or was it Kansas?), was the boss)
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?: Well I actually went to the gym and lost weight but I don't know if I was a better person. This year's goal is to find real love.
(I probably had a dumb one like "go to the gym more often like you used to" which I did over the summer and promptly stopped doing more than 3 times a week once school got underway. I will say that next year I just want to continue to be a better person.)
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?: No
(No one was preggers.)
4. Did anyone close to you die?: Thankfully, no.
(Unfortunately, yes.)
5. What countries did you visit?: Ireland, England, Israel, Southern Carribbean
(Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey. I think this is the first year I haven't gone to Canada. I'll be starting off the year right in Ireland and England as well.)
6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?: See below
(I will second Liz-- A fulfilling relationship. Also, less stress.)
7. What date from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?: Not really any.
(Days, not dates, are etched into my mind. Those days represent some of the most impactful days of my life thus far.)
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?: Getting a real job that I love
(Becoming editor-in-chief of The Berkeley Beacon and then (hopefully) not fucking it up too badly. Also, getting into grad school, getting an A in stats and doing well on my GREs. Yes, it has been a year of a lot of nerd accomplishments.)
9. What was your biggest failure?: See below.
(Losing love.)
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?: A couple of car accidents.
(Well I had the bubonic plague with Liz a few weeks ago. That sucked but we didn't die so all is good. I also had my wisdom teeth out but because I am severely allergic to penecilian they decided to foregoe the antibiotics. Then, when I had an allergic reaction to my pain meds the results sucked. I ended up face down in my backyard passed out haha. That ended up in me getting an infection since I wasn't on the meds to begin with and made the whole process as long as this explanation.)
11. What was the best thing you bought?: Cruise to the Carribbean for much needed loafing
($850 of spa goods at G spa.)
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?: Liz and the Meegs. Cyra and I at Hong Kong and Fast Times that one night.
(Liz's A game. The entire Beacon staff.)
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?: My own
(The crack whores who live on my block.)
14. Where did most of your money go?: Taxes-- but they can take them away if they will do something right with that money
(Nips, upgrades, spa, casino)
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?: VCRs
(Karaoke nights)
16. What song will always remind you of 2006?: Anything Huey Lewis, "Hold on for one more day" or 80s music in general
(As Liz said: "To Be With You" by Mr. Big, "Dragostea din tea," "River of Dreams," "Gold Digger", as well as the Mangina Dance, ODB, "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root, "Come as Melody" by Trey Anastasio and anything Kelly)
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?: Sadder
ii. thinner or fatter?: Thinner
iii. richer or poorer?: Richer
(i. happier or sadder?: Difficult to answer now but for the most part happier
ii. thinner or fatter?: Lost some weight
iii. richer or poorer?: Poorer)
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?: Being with my friends
(Lovin, drinkin, singin, dancin and being with my friends)
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?: Sitting around
(Work)
20. How will you be spending Christmas?: I did nothing which was nice
(Well I am Jewish so I won't be observing Christmas but Hannukah falls on the same day so I will be with my whole family)
22. Did you fall in love in 2006?: See below
(With my friends<-- good call, Cyra/Liz)
23. How many one-night stands?: Oh God

(No)
26. What was the best book you read?: The Historian and Pride and Prejudice (read it again if you haven't since elementary school)
("Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow-- a really long book for anyone who isn't devoted to Hamilton)
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?: Regina Spektor
(BJ Snowden, Q Laz)
28. What did you want and get?: Harvard
(Amazing friends, EIC, grad school)
29. What did you want and not get?: Teddy Roosevelt the French bulldog, everyone staying in Boston
(A healthy family)
30. Did you make any new friends this year?: Some awesome ones
(Yes)
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?: 22... Went with Cyra and Jameson to Match and then Cigar Masters to smoke with fat cat businessmen
(21...went out with my mom, had to work till 9 because it was a Beacon Monday night, went out to the bars with Cyra and Liz afterwards)
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?: See below
(A good partner. I am a romantic what can I say? It is nice to have someone to come home to.)
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?: Lots of tweed jackets and cropped pants with thigh high boots and of course the heels
(Mediteranean chic in the summer, argyle in the fall, cashmere in the winter with a whole lot of stilletos)
34. What kept you sane?: E-mailing my friends every second at work

(Well that damn xmas tree debate really pissed me off)
37. Who did you miss?: Everything below and my friends
(My family, my dog, nature)
38. Who was the best new person you met?: Everyone at work
(My bio professor who rivals journ professors for insanity, everyone I spent time with at The Beacon. Esp. those who I ended up spending a lot of time with outside of the newsroom.)
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006: Just because you work hard and your goal makes sense you don't always reach it.
(Liz said: "Men are shit." I say that sometimes life (and the people in it) is shit but you take the bad with the good and you keep going with everything you've got.)
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: "Hold On For One More Day"
("I don’t have to fear it/I want to rock your gypsy soul/Just like way back in the days of old/And together we will float into the mystic.")

10:37 pm - Loafed Out
It is 10:30 p.m. and I am ready for bed-- when did I become old? This weekend I went to my lakehouse in the Adirondacks and everyone was talking about what I was like when I was a child and I was just like "But I still am one! Oh wait, I guess not..."
Anyways, the lake was amazing. It is sad to say that I forgot how much Luzerne takes away all of my stress and leaves me at peace. Something about being able to swim or just float for hours at a time is really relaxing for me. And it was a good place to reevaluate where I stand in life.
I mean four generations of my family have been coming to this lake that I have spent every summer of my life at. It was a place where my entire family was able to be together in better times, it was a place of many firsts for me and a lot of inspiration for my writing-- not to mention it was the place where I had all of my first fantastical adventures (before the era of Nightmare). Who can forget the Indian trial walk with the "quick sand," Salmonella poisoning and probable shot gun blasts?
It was interesting to think about how Caley and I used to float around on boats, makeshift rafts or with whatever and dream about our futures. I remember her telling me all about the crazyiness that was highschool. Now we have graduated college, she is at dental school and I am working. We used to also talk about our first kisses and crushes and now look at us in that department.
I am not sure I am exactly where I want to be with every stage of my life. I do think, however, that it is nice to have a place where you can go and just get settled again. Everything that has been bothering me lately is over and I am ready to move on because of the serenity that that lake has given to me since forever.
Wow this entry is so corny! Hmm I am trying to think of something to man it up but considering I am listening to the Meet Joe Black theme I don't know if I can.
Last thoughts: We should all really go up to my house at some point. I discovered that Fun Spot-- the site of go karting, lazer tag, rollerskating and waterslides-- is still open and you know what you do there.

7. Shortest job you've ever had?
One month at OCFS.
8. Longest romantic relationship?
On and off almost seven years.

Love all the way.
In other news, John Kerry is our commencement speaker. He should be really good but if I am valedictorian I will probably be able to kick his ass in the speech writing as he is a bit lackluster. Damn us Dems for not picking people with ultra charisma.

01:34 am - Tribal Dancing
Imagine interpretive dancing so free that you were able to flail not just your arms but your entire body to the music. You could dance in circles, crawl on the ground, sit on your head and scream at the top of your lungs to tribal music, Talking Heads, rap and country. The dress code was mandatory no shoes and it was preferable to wear a unitard with vest or MC Hammer Parachute Pants. There are pillows on the ground if you need some time with your boo and watermelon for a refresher. This was our night of interpretive dancing at a church in Watertown.
Tonight was the ultimate stress reducer and I really needed it. This week has been angsty with so much homework and work for the book, a pulled shoulder, trouble finding a job and stress from other stuff that really bothered me. It got to the point where today I nearly lost it and was just about to break something when I got a phone call from someone who knew exactly what to tell me to chill out.
Anyways, I really didn't want just another loafy hangout at 62 or 26 (hey I never noticed the reversal of digits cool). I just felt like I would be brewing in my troubles and needed something more substantial to take my mind off of stuff that didn't require major cleaning when the night was done. Lets just say I got exactly what I needed.
The night started off with Mike, Pat, Nate, Cyra, Liz and I driving to Dorchester to go to our usual bowling place for a quick frame and some arcading. The parking lot was crammed and Nate refused to let my Jewish instincts kick into gear to find a close spot. So we drove to Cambridge to find a 1960s-style place because Pat absolutely refuses to play lazer tag. His loss. I did candlepin bowling for the first time ever and it didn't go too well. At one point my tiny ball actually went into another bowler's lane. Opps. Everyone else did well and there was beer.
Then we were on our way to Friendly's for Liz, who is still intrigued by that establishment even though the rest of us grew up eating there, when we saw a Church in the middle of nowhere announcing a dance. Of course when you think of Church Social you think of this group. But you know how we get for spontaneity and Cyra did crave to relive middle school memories she never got to have in church parking lots. So Pat, Cyra, Nate and I ran into the Church and while we should have been stunned at the sight of creepy middle aged hippies going buck with freedom we were totally natural about it and immediatley joined in. It was a spiritual adventure where no one bothered you and you were free to be yourself.
By the end my shoulder wasn't aching and I was totally destressed. So was everyone else. I don't know if I have ever had more fun with these people than tonight. We were totally free to do whatever and we had a lot of fun doing it ( wow I sound like I am possessed). Needless to say we will be back every Friday.
Afterwards, we drove to Friendlys. They were just closing at midnight but we demanded the upgrade to sundae service. Too bad everything I worked off dancing was probalby put back on. The sugar high topped me off. So much so that I am done with this post and must just loaf in my interpretive dance/ice cream induced haze of inner harmony.

02:15 pm - Time for an update!
I feel like everytime I write an entry I say something like "well it has been a long time since my last post." Whatever, I suck at updating.
This semester has flown by. I honestly feel like it should be February, not a week into April. So of course I feel unaccomplished and like I am wasting away my life. Haha I am so dramatic.
What is new? Well I finally heard from all of my grad schools and got good news from each one-- Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Yale, Georgetown, Dartmouth and SUNY Albany. I don't think there was a better school I could have wanted to apply to so I am pleased and relieved. Although it made my decision really hard because each has such a great program in public health (a field rapidly becoming one of the most important ones in not only the US but worldwide). In the end I decided on Harvard because I like its program the best (worldclass faculty and facilities, great internship programs and study abroad opportunities, alumni resources, Harvard, location).
Now I just have to find a job for next year. I hate the fact that college is over and I have to be an adult and actually work. Oh well, that will probalby do me some good... If anyone has some good health policy/health journalsm job ideas send them my way!
Everything else is good. I end my current job in two weeks and am currently trying to figure out my summer plans. Israel? The Cape? Boston? New York? Too many factors. But yeah, I am happy with all of my options.
Other than that I am spending my time with the kids at my place, 26, bowling alleys, arcades and tree museums lol. It is nice that every week there is some type of adventure.
For all of my home friends who are curious about the oddity of this year check this link out:

Clerks II ripped off the Beacon's main theme/dance that we have been collaboing on for years now.
Ripped off from Cyra:
Name ten of life's simple pleasures that you like most, then pick ten
people to do the same. Try to be original and creative and not to use
things that someone else has already used.
10. Floating in a lake on my back with the sun beating down on my face
9. Curling up under a heavy blanket and taking a nap
8. Soft lips
7. Bubble baths
6. Reading a newspaper all afternoon with nothing else to do
5. Walking in the park on the first nice spring day of the year
4. Ordering food/buying drinks for my friends
3. Massages
2. Learning new things/reading about any type of history
1. Going on random adventures with my friends and family that have no purpose except that they are extravagent and make me laugh.

Today was nice and loafy. Did some work. Went to the gym per usual and am about to go out with Liz. I am really happy for this week to be over with though. Have you ever felt totally immobilized? Like you can't do any work (whether it is for a job or homework), you can't read, you can't hang out and have fun with your friends because you are really nervous. This was the first week I have felt like that in a long time. I owe it all thanks to knowing that I was going to hear from the rest of my grad schools. Yeah, it shouldn't have made me nervous because I knew no matter what I had already gotten into some great schools. But, for some reason the nagging feeling that the next few years of my life were about to be decieded based on whether or not I had worked hard enough in undergrad was really bothering me. It was like I suddenly didn't know why I tried so hard only to switch career aspirations and have to then work hard to prove that I am good enough for the new direction. I really don't know why I have to keep trying to prove something to myself... but eh, it all worked out in the end. I got into every school that I have heard from and am really excited about the possibilities. But here comes the new fear about which decision to make when they all seem so good. I think I'll vote to stay in Boston though and I hope the Trifecta will be able to stay intact. If not, deh, I have to find other roommates. Ideas?
